What is Feng Shui?

Feng Shui is a traditional Chinese artform that translates to 'wind’ and ‘water' and describes the balance of life energy based on the geometry and positioning of objects within a spatial environment

The practice of aligning with this energy or ‘chi’ and adopting the fundamental concepts of good Feng Shui has been proven to optimize the connection with our surroundings and bring spiritual harmony.

Also known as the art of placement, this practical and grounding method of positioning objects enhances the circulation and flow of energy to promote health and well-being. This holistic approach to life stimulates personal nourishment, stability and serenity, and provides an essential foundation to mindfulness and prosperity.

Principles of Feng Shui

The chi, or Qi in Chinese, is the fundamental and vital energy that unites all matter in the universe, it connects everything together and is inherent in all things.

By cultivating this life force and allowing its unhindered flow, we encourage positive energy to be magnified. Feng Shui is the balancing of chi within the space will live in.

The five elements or forces of Earth, Metal, Fire, Wood and Water are the phases through which the chi moves. These are the philosophical principles and building blocks of life with each having a unique quality that work in symbiosis with the others.

Their characteristics, strengths and compatibility are core themes of Feng Shui. Each element generates one and controls another and finding the balance between them is key.

Yin and Yang is the concept of polarity, of the subtle duality of the natural world order where balance is brought to the universe and opposite energy flows complement each other to form a whole. These forces interact to form a dynamic system where one cannot exist without the other. This fusion of two opposites creates the perfect circle.

Finding that balance between yin and yang is fundamental to health and harmony.

Bagua is the Feng Shui energy map, the eight interrelated symbols that correspond to a specific aspect of life and the relationship between the earth, the heavens and humanity.

The bagua compass, or Eight Trigrams, is an essential octagon-shaped tool for studying both the positive and negative energy flows within a given space, it enables us to understand the connection between the chi and the five elements within a yin and yang framework.

It divides the environment into nine areas representing career and life journey, love and relationships, family and health, wealth and prosperity, helpful people and travel, children and creativity, knowledge and wisdom, fame and reputation, with the self at its center.

Feng Shui Schools of thought

The classic Feng Shui or Form School, the oldest of practices, relies on the topography of the environment and the analysis of the land and the natural elements to bring harmony between heaven, earth and human.

It places special emphasis on the properties of water and astrological factors. This method is most relevant when deciding on placement and direction of buildings and garden features.

The compass school of Feng Shui uses the Eight Trigram to diagnose the quality of specific locations and how the dynamic flow and direction of chi energy affects fortune within a time and space dimension.

It highlights how people are affected by shifts in energy through formulaic calculations.

The Black Hat Sect combines the classic and compass traditional schools within a more holistic and spiritual framework that incorporates elements of philosophy and divination more attuned to the modern way of living.

It relies on a simplified bagua grid where the main or front door is the reference point for placement and colors, where shapes and objects made of natural elements are used as enhancers depending on life goals.

Applying Feng Shui to your home

It is essential that our living spaces are attuned with the principles of Feng Shui to ensure that the good energy flows are boosted by reducing as many blockages as possible in all areas of the home.

Equipped with a bagua compass or a three-by-three grid representing the Lo Shu Magic Square, you can begin the placement process that will increase not only the stream of positive energy but promote a wider feeling of well-being, peace and harmony. You can use a floor plan or simply place yourself in an area and orienting yourself through the energy of your surroundings.

Starting with the commanding position, which taps into your unconscious mind and places you at the power location of a room, you can begin to control each area and the energy within it.

How the energy flows will be key to achieving balance and serenity with the environment. From the command position you can begin using your compass or bagua grid to shape your setting in accordance with your goals in life and issues that may need resolving.

Always be aware of how and where energy enters your home and try and ensure a continuous flow throughout each room and space. There should be no obstructions of doors or windows, you should always experience a sense of freedom as you roam and pause through all areas.

It is not for instance recommended to have a sofa or bed directly facing a door, however if the location does not permit otherwise there are flexible arrangements that can be made to counter any negative energy flows.

As an example, metal elements are most effective when placed in the bagua areas of west, northwest, and north, and you should limit their presence in the east and southeast areas.

If you are seeking financial rewards, add some plants or vegetation in the northwest which represents your wealth and prosperity area. Air quality is vital so be sure to have good circulation and ventilation everywhere in your home.

One of the most prominent Feng Shui masters, the Interior architect and celebrated author of ‘Holistic Spaces: 108 Ways to Create a Mindful and Peaceful Home’ Anjie Cho highlights how our surroundings are a reflection of our inner worlds and that by devoting Feng Shui principles to ‘high-traffic’ areas, we can have a profound impact on our emotions and magnify our all-round happiness through simple but effective changes.

Whether you are at the workplace or have shifted to a home office remote set-up, adopting simple Feng Shui principles will infuse your professional space with vibrancy and dynamism.

As you spend most of your time sitting at your desk, this should be your command position, and from there you start to align each element within your surroundings to optimize the energy flow according to your bagua grid.

The center of your desk should be your health area and build from there, use color-coding that stimulates grounding and then depending on your needs incorporate elements important to you.

Your chair is your support and provides the backing you need to succeed with comfort and stability.

Eliminate clutter and use your computer as a nerve center that inspires you with reminders of what makes you happy and keeps you motivated.
